New Delhi: Due to a Western Disturbance in Rajasthan, several districts have continued to experience spells of hailstorms, strong winds, and light rainfall over the past 24 hours. According to the Meteorological Department, the highest rainfall - 11.5 mm - was recorded in Padampur, Sri Ganganagar, while Bikaner and its surrounding areas witnessed heavy hailstorms.

What does the video show?

A video from Arjunsar in Bikaner is rapidly going viral on social media, showing fields covered in a white blanket of hail. This scene is being compared to Kashmir; witnessing it, locals and officials have expressed concern over crop damage and are looking to the government for assistance through crop insurance.

A forest official remarked, "This is not Kashmir; this is Arjunsar in the Bikaner district. This is the scene following yesterday's hailstorm. We hope the government will address the issue of crop insurance."

How is the weather in Bikaner?

The impact of this shift in weather is also clearly visible in the temperatures recorded in Bikaner. On Saturday, April 4, the maximum temperature here was recorded at 30 degrees Celsius—significantly lower than the 40 degrees Celsius recorded at the same time last year. The Meteorological Department has issued a 'Yellow Warning' for the city, forecasting the possibility of rain and hailstorms not only for Saturday but also for April 7 and 8. Experts believe that, despite Bikaner being an arid region, this unseasonal rainfall and hailstorm serve as an indication of the effects of climate change.

What is the weather update for North India?

Adverse weather conditions are also expected to persist in North India and other parts of Rajasthan over the coming days. The Meteorological Centre has predicted rain accompanied by thunder, lightning, and strong winds across the Bikaner, Jodhpur, Jaipur, Ajmer, Kota, and Udaipur divisions. Although weather activity may subside slightly on April 5 and 6, a fresh spell of intense storms and rainfall could commence again starting April 7, triggered by another active Western Disturbance. In addition to Rajasthan, the Meteorological Department has issued warnings for hailstorms and inclement weather over the next few days for Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi as well.
